Ringling College of Art + Design students are looking forward to building new relationships with Sint Lucas Antwerpen students!

The Assignment. The Objective.
Second-year Illustration students at Sint Lucas Antwerpen, Karel de Grote-Hogeschool, Antwerp, Belgium and the Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida have been given a common assignment:

‘A Day in a Life’ (or ‘Report of a Day’)

- Make a report of several aspects of your daily life in 5-8 sequences.

- Show some of the following aspects:

~your room, house, the ‘shelter’, cocoon you live in, breakfast, sharing space,

~the way to school, means of transport, the surroundings

~in school: classrooms, library, cafeteria, teachers, fellow students, furniture,

~meals, food habits, etc.

~activities after school: sports, music, dancing, cafés, walking, swimming, hobbies,

~friends, family.

- Items may be figures or objects, or a combination of both.

- The format will depend upon your concept. Approximately 18 x 24 inches

(45 x 75 cm.), but it can also be a long horizontal or vertical shape.

- Any media

This is my final result.

It's stuff I use/wear in my daily life.
I'm not really aware that I'm wearing or using it. Although it's very important to me.
Shoes: so I won't get cold feet and be able to walk long distances
Watch: time is money (two things I don't have)
Ipod: makes me happy when the sky is gray
Bicycle: for traveling in a faster and more 'green' way
Alarm clock: is having a hard time getting me out of a wintersleep

I didn't make a focus point. It's because all things are equal to me. My watch isn't more important to me than my shoes. You can hang the poster any way you like and it won't make a difference.

Done on paper with pensil and ecoline.

first of, let me say thanks to all those who posted their stuff!

The ringling students are on a short break right now, so we might be on hiatus for a few days.

next, i want to make a post on processes. I think everyone might benefit from this.

Regardless of what project one works on it involves a careful process of planning.

in our illustration class process is everything. As for me, i have a bit of trouble doing process. i want to jump straight to the final. Unfortunately, jumping to the final itself always gives me trouble. So ive been looking at how other illustrators attack an idea. They all follow a different process, but regardless they have a battle plan.

im going to link you to websites that might give you a clear idea of how others do it. not saying we all need to follow exactly what our favorite artist does, but its good to look at how others work.

WIP- intresting site, it shows you the process of getting there. it emphasizes more on the process of the final painting/ illustration than the whole process. but still something cool to look at.

Sterling hundley' Advice blog- look at the older posts, he offers a lot of advice/ stories of his venture in the industry.

This is my version of a day in a life. I illustrated the buildings I cross on my way to school, the people I talk to in a day, the café where I go for a drink often, the number of stears I walk in a day and the things that come into my stomach (in order of appearance. My original idea was to make pop-ups of these five themes, but time was too short to study the technique and execute it, so I did collage, paper-cut (I wanted to stick with paper as a material)and some scetches and combined them.

The one with color is my final version, I used the composition of pen drawings (wich u can see), duplicated it an added colour with PS. At the left I took a piece of the line drawing away and only left the colour.

This picture shows a view into my museum. Making a museum about yourself, i'ts quite narcistic, I know. My museum is filled with traces I leave during the day. (for example: drinks, footprint, tissues) It's a collage of newspaper-pieces and decoration-paper. The colors are all quite greyish, there isn't a lot of contrast in it, in my life neither (I like it anyway). Greetings from st.-Lucas

I wish I had a beard. Unfortunately it is impossible for (most) girls to grow one.
I also wish the actual movie poster for The Shining looked exactly like the one I painted.

(The picture made the colors look a little too bright, by the way...)

Hello everyone, i'm Tom. some info about the content of my work: every morning i eat a bordje of kwakies from den Aldi and i take my breakfast very, very seriously (black figure) I also practice kung fu (the green figure) and i am also a very talented musician since i can already play 'do' 're' and 'mi'. (red one) the blue one speaks for itself i suppose.. and i think southpark is good for my education (pink one).
i made this in one week since our teacher wasn't really enthousiastic about my first idea.
i wanted to try something i hadn't done before and i think it has potential but there's alot of things that could be improved. i wanted the poses to be a slighty bit over the top but not sure if it works. i also wanted it to have a bit of a trashy look so i added the white and black spots

ps: be careful with my print when it arrives, it cost me 33 euros! (which is like,...5 dollars !) :p

Here is my color rough. I had to make a small bit of variations on the line drawing so some elements have changed slightly but the color are staying the same. Definitely going with the one on the right. Hope everyone's process has went well and Good Luck on the final!

hello!
so here's my process work so far: from my brainstorming to my first thumbnails of my final line drawing.

the first manila colored pages were my thought process and just getting my ideas out of my head. I worked my way to a more refined thumbnail toward the end, which are the white pages. finally, here is my final line drawing and i am now working on my value studies.

i think i'll be going with the last value study with a slightly darker tree and a slightly lighter lunch table scene.

Philip Heylen Talk

Philip Heylen is the Vice Mayor for Cutlure and Tourism of Antwerp.

He gave a talk at the Exhibition hall regarding the relations going on with Ringling and Sint Lucas

he talked about his visit to sarasota and meeting with the president of ringling.

he gave an talk about various artists from his country (as an introduction).

His talk involved a lot of ideas about the importance of looking things in an international view. and how he hopes after exchange of teachers we can also incorporate exchange of students.

hopefully, with this blog, we will be able to connect with the Sint Lucas, and see a different view of this assignment.

On an interesting note, it seems that every one in Robin Cody's Painting class (at-least mine) also have Doug Chakya for illustration. I took a few shots of the studio just to show the environment.

Also we were given a quick presentation from Lode Coen who is a faculty of Sint Lucas. Lode Coen was teaching in Graphic and Interactive Arts major. He gave a presentation to Type Club, but also gave one to Robin Cody's Painting Class.

Lode Coen made his Graphic Design Class work with sequence to create a trailer/ advertisement for a Halloween event. He also had their students create a digital self portrait.

Also, Johan Luyckx, came here as a visiting artist. He worked with the senior photo majors, instead of giving an assignment, he wanted to let the students explore and figure out what they wanted to do.
